ANNIE

I watched a musical comedy-drama movie “ANNIE”, which is based on a comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray. This movie embraces “Good and friendly aspects” of U.S.A., expanded in New York City. Of course this is not the dark side of U.S.A., but is enjoyable for almost everyone. However, every time I encounter such a cheerful movie, I cannot think up with the stories in different vector directions, such as “Faust”, “Die Verwandlung”, “Der Zauberberg”, “Auslöschung. Ein Zerfall”, “Братья Карамазовы”, “Мастер и Маргарита”, “In a Grove(藪の中)”, “Night on the Galactic Railroad(銀河鉄道の夜)”, “Silence(沈黙)”, and so on. It is incredible that every single story in varieties is written by the same human beings. There are contrasts of fantasies and realistic stories, God and Devils, reasons and absurd, simplicities and complexities, consistencies and inconsistencies, pursuing objects and catastrophes. A single story is almost unable to describe everything in detail. That’s why we need dozens of good stories to reflect our lives secretly and individually. One may start singing “Who Am I?” in the movie “ANNIE”.

(I know this movie obtained severe criticisms, however, we are not always living a life in tension; sometimes we need a break.)

Although an individual story does not serve as a spectroscope for all the aspects of human beings, a whole bunch of the stories actually serves as the spectroscope and every story is a spectrum of the light from human beings. One may imagine what Воланд, Satan from “Мастер и Маргарита” would mention about a particular story. A question why on earth Воланд is Satan is a question worth asking to oneself.
