The Childhood of a Leader

On November the 27th, I watched the movie called “The Childhood of a Leader”. It was rainy, doomy and gloomy day and was good for watching such a kind of movie. It was about childhood of a fictional fascist leader in the 20th century, and is loosely based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s short story of the same name. Sartre is known to be an existentialist and the movie described how existence precedes essence. Essence is continuously renewed in such a circumstance. This is also true for the movie “Your Name”. However, Sartre also defended certain types of values. As a result, a fascist leader may somehow show up. Claude Lévi-Strauss criticized his attitude for the following reason: all the known society can be represented by a number of dichotomies; also, all the dichotomies have no reason to prioritize a choice over the other; therefore there is no reason to recognize the priority of a culture over the other cultures. In this way, a rise of fascists would be inhibited. The camera work of the story was characteristic for (angel's or devil's) view point, which moved around, rotated, and sometimes was upside down, representing very weird feelings. Music also proposed the weirdness of the movie. The story was mixture of English, French and a little German.
