Ohdaigahara

On September the 6th 2024, I visited Ohdaigahara. It is famous for its huge amount of rainfall among Japanese lands. It is also an elevated peneplain. The access to the better conserved virgin forest is restricted, so I visited more popular region in the east.

I woke up at 4:30AM and got back home at 8:30PM. It was a long day, but eagerness of the Japanese for mountains realized an access to this beautiful nature from my home within one day.

Brown Stew Fungus (Kuehneromyces mutabilis, センボンイチメガサ).

Shiokaradani Valley Suspension Bridge.

Rhododendron japonoheptamerum var. japonoheptamerum(ツクシシャクナゲ).

Ushiishigahara plain.

A statue of Jinmutennoh Emperor, the legendary first emperor in Japan.

Boardwalks are leading ahead.

Withered trees. The reason for this in sure is still unknown.

Asian black bears (Ursus thibetanus, ツキノワグマ) reside this place. There are bells for avoiding their encounter to human.

The top of Hidegatake Mountain. Unfortunately fogs rose, though I selected the sunniest day for climbing in a month.

You can see the strength of winds.

Common ink cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria, ヒトヨタケ).

For other species, I observed Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis (トウヒ), Veitch's fir (Abies veitchiiシラビソ), hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusaヒノキ), Nikko fir (Abies homolepisウラジロモミ), Japanese beech (Fagus crenataブナ), mizunara (Quercus crispulaミズナラ), tall stewartia (Stewartia monadelphaヒメシャラ), Japanese lime (Tilia japonicaシナノキ), forked viburnum (Viburnum furcatumオオカメノキ), Japanese witch hazel (Hamamelis japonicaマンサク), Shirasawa maple (Acer shirasawanumaオオイタヤメイゲツ), Japanese wingnut (Pterocarya rhoifoliaサワグルミ), Rhododendron quinquefolium (シロヤシオ), Japanese rowan (Sorbus commixtaナナカマド), Sasa nipponica (ミヤコザサ), varied tit (Sittiparus variusヤマガラ), willow tit (Poecile montanusコガラ), coal tit (Periparus aterヒガラ), Japanese robin (Luscinia akahigeコマドリ), great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos majorアカゲラ), sika (Cervus nipponニホンジカ).
