What Will You Do, Ieyasu? #26

In the 26th episode of the Japanese drama series “What Will You Do, Ieyasu?”, the character of Ieyasu Tokugawa suddenly became decent after the death of his wife, Sena. For dramatical reason in this drama it was unavoidable. In reality, Ieyasu Tokugawa was evaluated as “A great commander in field battle comparable with Terutora Uesugi” when Ieyasu was defeated by Shingen Takeda in Mikatagahara. Terutora was the mightiest commander in the period, and Ieyasu was already evaluated as an unordinary commander. If this was described in a document from Ieyasu’s side it was doubtful. However, it was also described in Koyo Gunkan, a document from Takeda’s side. The person who remonstrated with Shingen about the battle with Tokugawa was Nobuharu Baba, the resourceful general of Shingen and did not appear in the drama at all. He suggested that if Shingen could be accompany with Ieyasu, they already could rule over entire Japan. The unusualness of Ieyasu was thus predictable, and there was faint connection that Ieyasu became descent just after the death of Sena. Of course, great women in Japanese history were all called as “wicked woman”, such as Empress Jito, Empress Komyo, Masako Hojo, Tomiko Hino, Yododono, Kasuganotsubone and so on. These represent the craziness in Confucian society. Sena was no exception for this. However, Ieyasu’s sudden change was so dramatic in this drama, comparable to what might really be the background.
