The Northman

I have watched a movie “The Northman”. It was directed by Robert Neil Eggers, the director of “The Lighthouse”. In “The Northman”, Willem Dafoe also appears as the previous movie. The story is inspired by the legend of Amleth, or the famous “Hamlet” by Shakespeare. The outlines of the stories are common among these three. However, the details are diverged. The characteristics of “The Northman” are that they are based on proper researches of cultures into the period. If you only know Norse mythology as a kind of a fairy tale, or know “Hamlet” only on stages, “The Northman” is a good selection to watch because it would change your impressions to the period as a history (with a little ‘magic’ by drugs). Frequent usages of long takes will emphasize synchronicities of phenomena vividly, and common ravens would lead you to the world of Odin. The substitution of English to Old Norse during the production is not so welcomed, from my standpoint. I would like to watch an Old Norse version!
