In This Corner of the World(この世界の片隅に)

On November the 13th 2016, I watched an animated movie called “In This Corner of the World(この世界の片隅に)”. The audience was a variety of people. This story was originally written by Fumiyo Kono(こうの史代as manga (sorry, the link is only in Japanese), and the animation was directed by Sunao Katabuchi(片渕須直). It is a fiction movie describing a young woman who lived in Hiroshima and Kure. The main part was from 1943 to 1946, including the drop of atomic bomb in Hiroshima. The woman is called Suzu Urano/Hojo. She is good at drawing pictures, soft and calm, but gradually losing her temper during the decade, which was symbolized in the transition of background music. The music was started from a kind of consonant “Joy to the World! The Lord is come(もろびとこぞりて)”, but as the story proceeded, the proportion of the usage of dissonance increased, and resulted in slightly avant-garde senses. The story includes the customs, associations with neighbors and relatives in that age. The story is a mixture of comedy and tragedy with some sort of melancholic and avant-garde feelings. The detail of animation was very realistic. I could feel many intentions that are made slightly different from easygoing ways of thinking. The effects of perspectives and movements of characters were also excellent. There are a few fantastic way of descriptions, and they also made accents to the story. Overall, you should not miss the movie!
